One of Africa’s highest profile HIV/AIDS activists, Beatrice Were is a Ugandan woman who, in 1993, co-founded the NGO NACWOLA as a means to unite Ugandan women living with HIV/AIDS, and improve their quality of life. In 1991, a month after her husband passed away of AIDS, Were found out that she was HIV-positive. 
Were is also known for her strong criticism of the US global AIDS policy and has been awarded the InterAction Humanitarian Award and the Human Rights Defender Award - the highest honor given by Human Rights Watch.
She is currently a national coordinator for ActionAid.
